Argentina Overview
Buenos Aires is the capital
of Argentina, the 7th largest country in the world. It is an energetic and
seductive port city, which stretches south-to-north along the Rio de la
Plata and has been the gateway to Argentina for centuries. "Porteños", as
the natives of Buenos Aires are known, possess an elaborate and rich cultural
identity. They value their European heritage highly. Italian and German
names outnumber Spanish names and the lifestyle and architecture are markedly
more European than any other in South America. One of the world's finest
opera houses, the "Teatro Colon", flourishes here on the plains alongside
the river. "Porteños" are intensely involved in the life and culture of
their city, and they will gladly share the secrets of Buenos Aires if you
lend an ear and relate your own stories in return.
So why visit Argentina? The huge metropolis of Buenos Aires is one of the
most exciting, charming and fascinating of all South American capitals.
It's an immensely enjoyable place just to wander about, stopping off for
an espresso or an ice cream, or people-watching, or shopping, or simply
soaking up the unique atmosphere. Its many barrios, or neighbourhoods, are
startlingly different, some decadently old-fashioned, others very modern,
but all of them oozing character. Added to that, Buenos Aires is the country's
gastronomic centrepiece and boasts a frenzied nightlife that makes it one
of the world's great round-the-clock cities.
Add to this, the Andes, Patagonia and its glacial region, the huge Iguazú
falls, gauchos, skiing in the southern lake district
and
not to mention miles of beaches to the south of Buenos Aires and you've
got a very interesting location to explore.

Accommodation & Communications in Argentina
During training, accommodations in a home stay or shared apartment are available.
Buenos Aires home stay families open their middle-class, often single-parent,
households to our trainees. They may or may not have children living at
home. All host families live in attractive homes in safe neighborhoods.
In your host family's home, you will have your own bedroom and either a
shared or private bathroom. You will be given a key to the house or apartment
and are free to come and go as you please (though, as a guest living with
a host family, you should be sure to respect the routine of the people you
are staying with). Host families provide breakfast and dinner, and enjoy
spending time during meals chatting with students - typically, home stays
provide an excellent way to get to know the local culture and language.
After training, you will most likely rent a room in an apartment or house
with other students or Argentines. Some employers will provide a room for
you, either shared or single (usually in an apartment with other teachers)
and provide you with a monthly stipend.
Internet access is available to all trainees. After training, the common
locutorios offer both phone and Internet access for one to two pesos per
hour of Internet use. You may also print, scan, burn CDs, etc. at locutorios.
International calling cards or local prepaid telephone cards are required
to make international calls. Telephone cards are can be obtained at a kiosco,
locutorio, or newsstand. The cards may be used in either public phones (common
in Buenos Aires) or private phones simply by calling the company indicated
on the card (long-distance operators typically speak Portuguese, English
and Spanish).
Foreigners can
buy cell phones in Argentina as long as they have a "pre-paid" plan (prepago).
Some common companies that offer this service are: Telefónica, Movistar,
Personal, and CTi.
