Redeemer statue perched above it all, Rio de Janeiro is one of the most
spectacular cities in the world. And that’s just the view! Add the friendliness
of the locals, the laid-back attitude, and the tropical climate, and you’ll
soon see why they call Rio “A Cidade Maravilhosa” (the Marvelous City).
Rio de Janeiro is renowned for its festive atmosphere, especially during
Carnival—for five days every year, the city comes to a virtual standstill
as parties, dancing, parades, and samba music fill the streets. But Rio
is also a modern business center, home to the headquarters of some of Brazil's
largest national and multinational companies. As a TEFL / TESOL trainee

city
with nearly unlimited restaurants, businesses, tourist attractions, nightlife
options and, of course, beaches!

Teaching Jobs Overview - Brazil
It is easy to find teaching jobs in Brazil if you have an accredited certificate.
Brazil is still a great favourite for EFL teachers and it is rapidly regaining
its status as the most prestigious country in South America. Tourism and
foreign investment are booming.
TEFL teachers seeking employment in Brazil will most likely find work in
private language centers in Rio de Janeiro. Located throughout the city,
most English schools are conveniently near public transportation, cafes,
restaurants, and shopping areas.
Most EFL students in Rio are professionals who need to improve their English
for their jobs. They are typically highly motivated, accomplished, eager
to learn and rewarding to teach. Most classes in Rio are very small: with
1-3 students. You should earn enough teaching English in Brazil to live
comfortably, although you probably will not be able to add much to your
savings.
Many English teachers in Brazil arrange language-tutoring exchanges, trading
English classes for Portuguese instruction. We highly recommend this tactic!

Accommodation & Communications in Brazil
Accommodations are available during training, either in a shared apartment
or with a host family. Most host families are retired ladies or couples
in their 50s or 60s living either alone or with a grown son or daughter.
Most of the families have pets (dogs or cats), few have young children.
Brazilians typically adore their pets; if you do not, please let us know
in advance.
Most of the host families live near in "Zona Sul", and almost
all have easy access to public transportation.
While living with your family, you will be an active guest, included in
the activities and chores of the family. You will have your own key and
may come and go as you want, but should be courteous and let your family
know your plans - especially around mealtimes as your host family will provide
breakfast and dinner for you.
Long distance calls and cell phone calls are very expensive in Brazil, so
you will need a calling card and a Latin-American facility with text-messaging.
Telephone cards are sold at many kiosks and newsstands. The cards may be
used in either public or private phones simply by calling the company indicated
on the card (long-distance operators typically speak Portuguese, English
and Spanish).
While most remote
areas in Brazil lack convenient Internet access, Rio itself is dotted with
Internet cafés and even free wireless access in many locations.
