The TEFL / TESOL Quito - Ecuador course training centre is in a very new
part of Quito, with all of the conveniences of a modern capital. The city
is right in the middle of the Andes, and its central location allows for
plenty of weekend sightseeing in the rest of Ecuador.
The TEFL / TESOL Quito - Ecuador program begins with a week of Spanish language
and cultural training, directed to your level of Spanish ability. During
this week you can become familiar with the city of Quito, brush up on or
learn Spanish, and become acquainted with your Ecuadorian host family. This
is followed by an intensive four-week TESOL training and certification course
that provides participants with professional knowledge and skills in TESOL
methodology, as well as teaching practice with local EFL (English as a Foreign
Language) students. The TEFL / TESOL Quito - Ecuador Certificate you will
earn is internationally recognized and will allow you to teach English in
any overseas location. During training, the staff will provide counsel and
guidance on CV (resume) development, what Ecuadorian employers are looking
for, and schools that have teaching positions. Teaching positions are readily
available throughout Quito, and elsewhere in Ecuador. Home stay accommodations
are included during the five weeks of training.
A key component of the TEFL / TESOL Quito - Ecuador Program is sponsorship
for a one-year Cultural Exchange visa. The cost of the visa is included
in the program fee, and TEFL / TESOL Quito - Ecuador will obtain the visa
for you before you depart for Ecuador, and coordinate the transfer of the
visa to the hiring school – eliminating any concerns about working
in the country legally. Other support services are included as well, such
as a one year travel insurance policy and a re-entry package that helps
you leverage your experience abroad as you look towards employment or furthering
your education when you return to your home country.
Ecuador Overview
Stretching from the
Volcano Pichincha to the west and the steep canyon of the river Machangara
in the east, Quito is divided into "Old" and "New" cities.
The Old has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site based on its astounding
colonial architecture, while the New shines with modern office buildings
and thriving businesses. Ecuador continues to be one of the most popular
locations for TEFL / TESOL Quito - Ecuador participants.
Early in the 16th century, Incas controlled Ecuador and used Quito as their
northern capital. Unfortunately, an Incan general destroyed the city in
1533, rather than let it fall into the hands of the Spanish conquistadors.
"Modern" Quito was built from the ruins, and became a Royal Audiencia of
Spain in 1563, separating the administration of what is now (roughly) Ecuador
from Peru.
Our Training Center is in a very new part of Quito, with all of the conveniences
of a modern capital. The city is right in the middle of the Andes (several
nearby peaks stellar day trips), and its central location allows for plenty
of weekend sightseeing in the rest of Ecuador. Nearby are opportunities
to swim in the warm Pacific waters, visit colorful Indian markets, and witness
some of the most magnificent active volcanoes in the world. Within the city
itself, a very extensive network of public transportation allows for easy
exploration of both the Old and New cities.
The air is thinner at nearly 3000 meters above sea level, so take time to
acclimate and bring warm clothes - though located on the equator, Quito
nights are chilly (7°C/55°F) year round. Quito natives keep warm through
the evening with salsa dancing, which all visitors should be ready to learn.
The
wet season (which is not too wet) lasts from October through May, while
the dry season runs from late June to September. Dry season highs average
26°C/78°F.

Accommodation & Communications in Ecuador
During training, TEFL / TESOL participants live with our Ecuadorian host
families. Families in Ecuador have a reputation for being warm and fun-loving,
making it easy for you to feel right at home, and all of our host families
are experienced hosts, accustomed to having foreign guests in their homes.
Many have at least one family member who speaks English, and all are used
to communicating with foreigners. Some meals are also included while staying
with your host family.
After training, most Teachers find an apartment for solo or group living.
As families in Quito tend to be large, apartments tend towards the spacious.
It's relatively easy to find a clean, safe, comfortable place to live (though
the electric showers make some people nervous).
Internet access is widespread in Ecuador, and there are many decent, fast,
and cheap (US$1-1.50 per hour) internet cafes quite near the Training Center.
Most foreigners living in Ecuador, and in fact most Ecuadorians, rely on
internet cafes, though Teachers who chose to bring a computer with them
can normally obtain dial-up internet access at their apartments.
(Note
that broadband is still rare in Ecuador - be prepared for all dial up, all
the time.)
