Peru Overview
The land of gold and of the
sun-worshipping Incas, Peru was sixteenth-century Europe's major source
of treasure, and once the home of the largest empire the world had ever
seen. An immense desert coastline, tracks of tropical rain forest, and soaring
mountain peaks fuse together to create one of the most diverse landscapes
in the world. The beauty of its various landscapes, the abundance of its
wildlife, its rich and diverse cuisine, and the strong and colorful character
of its people make Peru arguably the most exciting of all South American
nations.
Perched 11,000 feet high in the southwestern Andes, Cusco is known as the
archeological capital of the Americas. The city has long made a name for
itself as the gateway to nearby Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, both national
treasures and remnants of Peru's ancient past. Every narrow street and lane
resonates with history and tradition, as traces of ancient Incan culture
and the town's colonial past provide a captivating backdrop for the contemporary
buildings and modern conveniences of an international metropolis.
Despite its proximity to the equator, Peru spans three disparate climates
-- coastal, mountain, and jungle. Due to its high elevation, nights in Cusco
can be chilly while the days are sunny but relatively cool all year round.
It experiences two major seasons - a dry summer from May through September,
and a more humid, rainy winter from October through April.
The
average annual high and low temperatures for the city are 68°F (20°C)
and 41°F (5°C), with average precipitation of 2.5 in (6.4 cm) during
the rainy season.

Accommodation & Communications in Peru
During the TESOL Certification Program, accommodations can be arranged in
either a home stay or in a shared apartment.
Cusco home stay families open their middle-class, often single-parent, households
to our trainees. They may or may not have children living at home. All host
families live in attractive homes in safe neighborhoods. In your host family's
home, you will have your own bedroom and either a shared or private bathroom.
You will be given a key to the house or apartment and are free to come and
go as you please (though, as a guest living with a host family, you should
be sure to respect the routine of the people you are staying with). Host
families provide breakfast and dinner, and enjoy spending time during meals
chatting with students. Typically, home stays provide an excellent way to
get to know the local culture and language.
Shared apartments are located near the training center and usually offer
fully equipped kitchens, dining rooms, and private or shared bedrooms and
bathrooms. Prices vary depending upon whether you choose a private, shared,
or dormitory room.
After training, you will most likely rent a room in an apartment or house
with other students or Peruvians. Some employers will provide a room for
you, either shared or single (usually in an apartment with other teachers)
and provide you with a monthly stipend.
International calling cards or local prepaid telephone cards (tarjetas telefónicas)
are required to make international calls. You can buy phone cards from corner
shops, farmacias or on the street from cigarette stalls throughout the city.
There are currently two phone outfits, Telefónica del Peru and Telepoint,
each of whom produce their own cards for use in their phones only.
Peru has good
internet connections, with cyber cafés and Internet cabins found
in even the most unlikely of small towns.
