Teaching Programs: Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

About Costa Rica |
| |
“Costa Rica has long been renowned for stunning natural beauty, enlightened environmental policies, democratic government, dense and diverse wildlife, and warm, welcoming people.”
Columbus landed in Costa Rica in 1502, but it wasn’t until 1838 that this nation of mountains and beaches became an independent republic. Having grown relatively wealthy from coffee and banana exports, Costa Rica is now a haven for tourists and travellers, as well as a proud democracy with a growing industrial sector.

About Manuel Antonio |
| |
Our partner Training Centre in Costa Rica is located in Manuel Antonio, on Costa Rica’s central pacific coast, where the rainforest sweeps down from the mountains to greet palm-fringed beaches.
One of the nation’s most stunning national parks, Manuel Antonio is a living paradise and nature lover’s dream. The trees are alive with tropical birds and three species of monkey, including the rare mono titi (of which only 1200-1300 are left in existence). Wild orchids and butterflies abound, as well as sloth and the inquisitive coati.
Manuel Antonio’s urban neighbour Quepos provides a glimpse into traditional Costa Rican life and hospitality. Located just a few minutes from our campus, this small town can be easily explored on foot yet, for its size, offers an astonishing assortment of international restaurants as well as shops, Internet cafés, beaches, a farmer’s market, and a colourful nightlife.
Costa Rica’s tropical climate is characterized by a rainy season (May into November) and a dry season (mid-November through April). Temperatures vary based on altitude, from year-round beach weather on the coasts to the consistently temperate mountain valleys.

Job Placement |
| |
Most Teachers work in private universities or language schools, while a smaller number will be placed in private primary schools and high schools. A few teach adult courses offered by banks, travel agencies, and other organizations. Job placements are focused in the Central Valley, in and around San Joe, as that is where the majority of jobs are found.
Wages for Teachers in Costa Rica are normally between $250 and $400 per month. Since room and board for an individual generally run at more than $200 per month, it is not typical for Teachers to save money.
While most schools and companies in San Jose pay salaries to Teachers, those in more rural locations frequently offer only accommodations and meals.

General |
| |
Meals:
While Costa Rica is not famed for its cuisine (beans and rice or rice with beans?), San Jose offers a wide array of remarkably affordable international restaurants.
Water in San Jose is generally safe to drink, though bottled is the way to go once out of the city.
Participants are responsible for their own meals.
Clothing:
Costa Rican dress can be described as “Western tropical.” Linens and cottons are appropriate in the city (along with a sweater for chilly mountain nights), while wilderness lovers are advised to put function before form.
When teaching, women should cover their shoulders (sleeveless shirts are acceptable, but very thin straps or tank tops are not). No low-cut necklines or very short skirts. Open-toed shoes are acceptable.
Male Teachers should wear long pants (not jeans), short- or long-sleeved shirt with a collar, and loafers or dress shoes. Long hair should be neatly tied into a ponytail.
Housing:
Your host school will assist you in arranging suitable accommodation. Most Teachers find that room and board for an individual costs approximately $200-$300 per month.
Communications:
Teachers are provided with international calling cards to keep in touch with family and friends. Costa Rica lacks widespread Internet access, though there are affordable Internet cafés in the larger towns and cities.
Things to See & Do:
From misty cloud forests to active volcanoes to pristine rainforests to lush tropical coasts, Costa Rica holds something special for everyone who visits.
Minutes from our Training Centre, Manuel Antonio boasts a series of magnificent beaches perfect for studying alone or for spending a day with new friends. Many activities are also available, including hiking, horseback riding, surfing, rainforest canopy tours, river rafting, and sea kayaking.
From the bohemian feel on the beach, to the sunset bars and restaurants clinging to the hillside, to the authenticity and charm of Quepos, every Teacher-in-training finds a niche (or two) to call their own.
Nightlife in San Jose, fuelled by tourists and university students, requires a taste for salsa and merengue and the stamina to sample the wide variety of bars and dance-clubs that fill the livelier sections of the city.
San Jose also boasts the well-planned bird-watcher’s paradise of Parque del Este, while nearby the famous white waters of the Reventazón River beckon hardy rafters.
The varied ecologies of the Río Sapiqui region, north of San Jose, draw environmentally conscious visitors from around the word, especially to the misty, orchid-filled cloud forests of Monteverde Reserve.
Throughout your time abroad, we offer activities and cultural events - such as group dinners and visits to local attractions.
