About Spain

Spain is not the second most visited country in the world for nothing - Spain's attractions are matchless. But how you enjoy your trip will depend very much on where you decide to take it, for Spain is not a single, homogeneous country, but many countries in one.

Spain is one of the world's most seductive countries: a land of infinite variety that beckons people back again and again, and a place where there is always something new and unexpected to be discovered. Visitors can experience the Spaniards' passion for partying. Snack on tapas as you skip from bar to bar, before heading off to enjoy Spain's infamous nightlife. Then revitalise the senses - Spain's cultural heritage brims with flamenco, painting, opera, literature, sport, bullfighting and flamboyant, colourful fiestas.

Spain's beaches are famous. Sun, sea and sand are the foundations on which Spain's tourist industry was built and absorb the bulk of the fifty-odd million visitors it receives annually. The Mediterranean costas need no introduction, the country's other coastlines, its Atlantic coast north of Portugal, the Costa de la Luz in the Bay of Cadiz, and its Cantabrian Costa Verde, green coast, are yet to be discovered by international mass tourism.

But it isn't just Spain's natural landscape that inspires. The cities, too, are bursting with fine architecture and culture, and are famous for their ability to show visitors a good time. Its cities, towns and villages are fascinating, from great historical cities like Toledo or Granada to the bustle of modern Barcelona, or the white villages of Andalusia. Spain is a treasure chest of unforgettable scenery and experiences.

Spain, the third largest country in Europe, covers the greater part of the Iberian Peninsula . Besides the mainland peninsula, Spanish possessions include the Mediterranean Balearic Islands, the Canary Archipelago (in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa) and the Moroccan coastal enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Its southernmost point faces Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar, making Spain a bridge between continents.

Spain is soaked in the historical pageantry of empire and conquistadors and has a fantastic artistic legacy in the shape of painters like Goya, Picasso, Dali and Velazquez. Don Quijote by Cervantes is one of the world's greatest works of fiction.

Spain is one of the world's most seductive countries: a land of infinite variety that seems to get under people's skin, and a place where there is always something new and unexpected to be discovered.

About Barcelona

Located by the Mediterranean sea on the very north of the Spanish coast, Barcelona is certainly the most cosmopolitan and economically the most active city in this country. The capital of Catalonia is unequivocally a Mediterranean city, not only because of its geographic location but also because of its history, tradition and cultural influences. Barcelona has a more European feel to it than anywhere else in Spain.

Cool and vibrant Barcelona, Spain's second city, has such a wealth of attractions that it's no wonder it has become Europe's most popular short break destination, and a common stop for Mediterranean cruise-liners. This enchanting city is a visual delight, and has an atmosphere that combines elegance and sophistication with provincial charm. Boasting a lush setting right beside the sea, surrounded by hills, it has sensational architecture, a lively, walkable centre, truly great restaurants and bars at reasonable prices, and good beaches nearby.

It has always proved its will to be modern, to follow the latest international trends or be ahead of them. To the tourist this is evident especially in its architecture, which so well reflects the general approach to life in this pulsating city. Barcelona is famed for its fabulous blend of architectural styles. Of course, the city has an old history, and there are monuments of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance periods, but most characteristic is what has been built during the last 100 years. Barcelona has been a centre of Modernist architecture and is distinguished especially by the works of Antoní Gaudí.

The old city is a twisting maze of narrow streets and ancient mansions, overlooked by the soaring spires of the flamboyant Gothic cathedral. Beyond is the elegant grid of the 19th-century new city, thickly clustered with the greatest concentration of Modernist monuments in the world.

Down by the harbour, the city has reinvented itself with glitzy new developments around the Port Olmpic, and a string of popular beaches that are packed in summer.

The city's assets are complemented by the warm Mediterranean climate, which makes sitting out on sunny squares and strolling in the shadowy streets of the old city an extra pleasure.

Barcelona is one of the most dynamic capitals in the world. Summer is serious party time, with week-long fiesta fun. But year-round the city sizzles - it's always on the biting edge of architecture, food, fashion, style, music and good times.

General

Like most countries the possession of all recreational drugs in Spain is illegal. However the Spanish authorities take the matter of drugs very seriously and the possession of even small quantities can lead to imprisonment.

In particular, the authorities in Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza are likely to prosecute anyone caught taking or carrying drugs in clubs or other public places. The Madrid City, the Balearics and Canary Islands Regional Governments have banned, other than in registered street cafes and bars, the consumption of alcohol in the street. Failure to respect this law may result in the imposition of fines.
