TEFL Course - Argentina

About Argentina

Argentina is vast, stretching from the tropics to Antarctica, your travels are limited only by time and imagination.

It is home of some of the world's tallest mountains and impressive waterfalls, and is well being known for its wide-open pampas and ancient forests.

Home of the tango, fine wines, Maradona and the gaucho, Argentina possesses a rich cultural heritage and cosmopolitan city life. But for many travellers, it is the country's incredible geographical diversity, abundant wildlife and natural wonders that are the primary draw. From the northern deserts to the southern Andean Cordillera, from IguazĂș Falls to the magnificent desolation of Patagonia, Argentina's geography is both varied and stunning.

A land of extremes, the country's hectic urban centres contrast with a staggeringly remote hinterland - it can be simultaneously hot in one region and cold in another. The one common thread is that the people possess a curiosity, passion, and fervour for life.

European influences permeate Argentina's art, architecture, literature and lifestyle. With an excellent university level education, the citizens of Argentina have modern, refined tastes and customs. This is demonstrated in the festivities, exhibitions, cinemas, theatres, and concerts that take place in the principal cities.

This intense cultural activity has led to many people referring to the capital Buenos Aires, as the Paris of the Americas. While Buenos Aires is the most sophisticated city of Latin America, with its tango nightspots, yacht club and renovated docklands, the variety on offer in this amazing country means that a outside the city you can ride with the gauchos in the pampas or go trekking in the Andes.

Argentina, vastly unexplored and undiscovered by most tourists, is an adventure waiting to happen.

About Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is one of the most European cities in South America. The city was built by French, Italian and Spanish immigrants and the Porteños (locals) still regard themselves as more European than South American. With its wide boulevards, leafy parks, grand buildings and varied culture and nightlife, the city is reminiscent of Paris or Barcelona.

The elegance of Europe and the spirit of South America live side by side in Buenos Aires - if Buenos Aires has a European face, its soul is intensely Latin. This is a city where the sun shines brightly, people speak passionately, family and friendship still come first. It is a city where locals go outside to interact, lining the streets, packing cafe terraces, and strolling in parks and plazas.

The ninth-largest city in the world, BA is a sprawling metropolis rising from the RĂo de la Plata and stretching more than 200 square km (75 square miles) to the surrounding pampas - the fertile Argentine plains. With more than one-third of the country's 39 million inhabitants living in or around Buenos Aires, the city is the political, economic, and cultural centre of Argentina and the gateway to the rest of the country.

Buenos Aires residents want visitors to like their city, and indeed they have a lot to show off to sightseers. The city is broken up into little barrios, or neighbourhoods, each one with its own personality. Since the peso was devalued two years ago, pounds, euros and dollars get you a lot of steak, fun, leather, wine or whatever else you are looking for. Once a mere stopover, BA is well worth a visit for itself - it is an exciting, entertaining and welcoming city to visit.

Getting Here & Visas

Argentina has excellent worldwide air connections, with Aeropuerto Internacional Ezeiza, outside Buenos Aires, the main international airport. A departure tax of US$23.50 (plus 21% IVA) is payable on international flights; the tax is US$5 (plus 21% IVA) on flights to Uruguay. Note that all taxes and costs will be up in the air until the monetary crisis sorts itself out.

If you're arriving at the Ezeiza airport, there are several buses you can take to Buenos Aires. The buses take a while (up to 2 hours if traffic is bad), but they're a cheaper option than taxis.

Visas

Most foreigners do not need visas and, in theory, will be issued free, renewable 90-day tourist cards on arrival.

Basic Living Costs

Until recently, Argentina was an expensive country to visit - so expensive that Argentines were in the habit of taking their holidays in 'cheap' countries, like the USA. The economic policy that pegged the peso one-to-one to the US dollar kept prices high but inflation under control.

The recent devaluation of the peso means that all bets are off. At present, the peso has shrunk to about half the value of the US dollar, and it's anyone's guess as to how much further it may drop when banking restrictions are eased. This could translate to bargains for budget travelers, but that's only if inflation remains in check. Right now, the government is urging businesses not to raise their prices, as rampant inflation would plunge the already fragile economy into chaos. In the 1970s and '80s, inflation consistently exceeded 100% per year and was often much higher, reaching an astounding 5000% in 1989. Given Argentina's history of economic instability, savvy travelers should keep a watch on the exchange markets and on economic events.

Health & Safety

Dengue Fever is one to watch out for in the subtropical north. The Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the dengue virus, is most active during the day, and is found mainly in urban areas, in and around human dwellings.

Signs and symptoms of dengue fever include a sudden onset of high fever, headache, joint and muscle pains, nausea and vomiting. A rash of small red spots sometimes appears three to four days after the onset of fever. Severe complications do sometimes occur.

You should seek medical attention as soon as possible if you think you may be infected. A blood test can indicate the possibility of dengue fever. There is no specific treatment. Aspirin should be avoided, as it increases the risk of hemorrhaging. There is no vaccine against dengue fever.
