About Italy

Italy means something different to every tourist. Pizza, ruins, great works of art, hot beaches, handsome youths, good wine... The country is an obliging one, and few visitors leave disappointed. If you're looking for one aspect of Italy, you'll find it served on plate, even richer than you expected. And if you are open and receptive, the chances are you'll find much more than you dreamed of.

Italy combines art history and contemporary fashion with stunning natural landscapes. From the depths of the canals in Venice and the bleached sands of San Remo on the Riviera, to the rocky crags of the Alps, Dolomites and Apennines, Italy has everything from beach holidays to luxury mountain ski resorts to chic happening cities.

Italians are known for their impeccable style and fashionable dress sense. They're also known for once having an empire that stretched across the globe, and for having the most spectacular churches, frescos, sculptures and Renaissance paintings in all of Europe.

The Italy of today is home to the relics of more than 3,000 years of history, and an atmosphere that ranges from the Armani-wearing-scooter-driving-espresso-drinking buzz of its cities to the quiet, pastoral existence of its hillside olive farms and seaside fishing villages.

Italy is a peninsula in Southern Europe in the Mediterranean Sea. Its most prominent feature is its boot-like shape kicking the island of Sicily. The country includes two large islands: Sicily and Sardinia. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, with active volcanoes and earthquakes. Sardinia is basically mountains rising out of the ocean.

Italy also has two independent countries within its borders. Vatican City is the centre for the Roman Catholic Church, and is the world's smallest country. San Marino, on the north east coast of Italy, is an independent republic.

Over the last three thousand years, Italy has had a consistently rich culture, producing fine buildings, works of art, and a mythologised history with timeless appeal. Home of da Vinci, Michelangelo, Carvaggio and Botticelli, its artworks are a visual delight to all visitors. Italy 's cities reveal awe-inspiring architecture from the curved arches of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence to the crumbling magnificence of the Colisseum in Rome.

About Florence

Possibly Italy's most beautiful city, Florence is an essential destination for any serious art lover, who'll be overwhelmed by the quantity, let alone the quality, of some of the most important examples of western art anywhere in the world, concentrated into one small, beautiful city.

Millions of tourists flock to the Renaissance City every year and the city handless the onslaught with good grace. Home to the Uffizi galleries, Michaelangelo's David, the world-famous Ponte Vecchio as well as castles and gardens galore, the city of Florence is a major cultural centre and buzzing with life. The chapels, galleries and museums capture the spirit of the Renaissance more fully than any other city in Italy: no visitor could fail to be impressed.

Florence was the birthplace of the European Renaissance in the 14th Century. By the time it ended, an entire continent had been ushered through the Dark Ages and into a vibrant world full of indescribable artistic beauty. The achievements of the Renaissance have been preserved and lovingly cared for by the city, and today a visit to Italy is not complete without paying homage to Florence.

But before you think that Florence is a city trapped in the past, know that it is a highly modernized Italian town, with most locals navigating the swamped city streets with cell phones in hand. They are sometimes exasperated by the influx of tourists, particularly in the summer, but they have come to accept tourism as a necessary evil that provides a healthy boom to the Florentine economy.

Getting Here & Visas

Air

Pisa's airport, Galileo Galilei, is the international gateway to Florence. Situated 80km (50 miles) from Florence, it provides easy access to the city by road or rail. The most hassle-free and commonly used way for arriving tourists to travel to Florence is on the train. The station, Pisa Aeroporto, is just a short stride from the airport and tickets are available for purchase on the concourse. Trains depart more or less every hour to the city centre.

Visas

US, Australian, Canadian, Japanese, and New Zealand citizens are among those who may enter Italy as tourists without a visa and stay up to 90 days. EU passport holders can come and go as they please. Nationals of other countries must obtain a visa to enter Italy. As with all countries your passport must be valid for at least 6 moths.

Basic Living Costs

Those on a tight budget will find eating and sleeping in Italy expensive. Prudent backpackers might squeeze by on around E40.00 to E45.00 a day if they stay in hostels, make their own sandwiches, avoid indulging in alcohol and don't visit too many museums. If you want to stay in comfortable hotels, eat out regularly in restaurants and visit lots of museums and galleries, you should budget at least E100 per day!

Example of daily costs
litre of petrol Euro 1.40
souvenir t-shirt Euro 10.00
can of soft drink Euro 0.80
litre of bottled water Euro 1.00
litre of milk Euro 1.40
slice of pizza Euro 2.00
bottle of Peroni Euro 2.00
CD Euro 15.00
basic 'Serie A' football ticket Euro 15.00

Service charges are included in your restaurant bill, so you are not expected to tip. It is common practice, however, to leave a small amount. In bars, Italians will usually leave any small change as a tip, but this is by no means obligatory. Be aware that prices in Italian bars and cafes double (sometimes even triple) if you sit down. Tipping taxi drivers is not necessary, but your hotel porter will expect a little something

Health & Safety

Though levels of crime are low, take care on public transport and in crowded areas where pickpockets and bag snatchers may be operating. In Rome, take particular care around the main railway station, Termini, and on the number 64 bus, which goes to and from St Peter's Square. Also take care in and around railway stations in other large Italian cities. Be particularly wary of groups of children who may try to distract your attention whilst trying to steal from you. Passports, credit cards, travel tickets and cash should not be carried together in handbags or pockets. Only carry with you what you need for the day. Consider making use of safety deposit facilities in hotels.

All travellers are advised to take out comprehensive travel & health insurance cover.

General

If you are planning to go skiing it is advisable to contact the Italian State Tourist Board for advice on safety and weather conditions before travelling.
